Half day · Ferry preferred / drive optional
South Head deep dive (drive or ferry)
Best for: Photographers and heritage walkers who want more than a rushed lookout

Extra time on South Head Heritage trail, lighthouse angles and village pace — ferry or drive variants with the same “one headland” discipline.
Use this when the half-day ferry escape felt too short or you want cleaner light. Same geography, slower tempo: more sitting at lookouts, less sprinting for a single postcard. The win is still one headland done well — not South Head plus a secret second park.
Ferry is still the better first choice. Driving only pays if you have beach kit, mobility needs, or you are sleeping in Watsons Bay / Vaucluse. Peak car parks at Camp Cove and the village fill; a full lot is Plan B (ferry or a later slot), not a reason to invent illegal parking.
Always check NSW National Parks local alerts and live Transport for NSW times the morning you go. This guide is unofficial and does not show live closures or timetables.
Track status and weather change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then follow the timeline below.
Timeline
0:00
Arrive Watsons Bay
Ferry preferred. If driving, pay and park only where signs allow, then treat the rest of the day as if you came by boat — walk, do not hop the car between lookouts.

Facilities + return plan
Toilets, water, village landmark. Screenshot the return ferry (or your drive-out time) before you walk onto the headland.
0:30–2:30
Heritage trail + Hornby lookouts
Formed paths, ocean and harbour angles, lighthouse colour. Stay behind barriers. Sit longer at one good platform instead of collecting every spur.
2:30–3:15
Optional second loop OR village reset
Only if energy and light are still good: a slower return along a formed segment you skipped. Otherwise sit down and eat. Do not invent Nielsen or North Head from here.
3:15+
Village + protected exit
Queue early on peak days. One calm ferry home beats a rushed second headland.

Ferry tips
- Same buffer rules as the half-day ferry escape — last acceptable sailing is a decision, not a hope.
- Check live times the morning you travel; weekend queues are real.
Parking tips
- Peak days: ferry wins. If you drive, arrive early and read every sign.
- Never leave bags visible. A full car park is a ferry/Plan B moment.
Skip if short on time
- Nielsen Park add-on
- North Head same afternoon
- Island landings
