Where you start

Middle Head or Georges Head signed access

Start at signed public access points. Some fort areas may be restricted or tour-only — obey all fencing and signage. This is managed heritage, not a free-range playground.

How to get there

  1. Drive or bus to Mosman headland precincts; read parking signs carefully (multiple managers in the broader area — NPWS rules are not the only ones).
  2. Closed shoes recommended for uneven historic ground, cobbles and battery approaches.
  3. Carry water; shade can be limited on exposed fort platforms.
  4. If combining with Bradleys Head, decide which is primary before you leave — stacking both fully is ambitious for mixed groups.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Follow formed tracks between lookouts and open heritage areas only.
  2. Read interpretation panels; do not climb on fragile structures, guns or walls for photos.
  3. Turn around while daylight and energy remain — historic ground is harder when you are tired.
  4. Consider official guided tours when you want stories (and sometimes spaces) you should not DIY.

Who this heritage walk is for

Middle Head to Georges Head suits walkers who want military heritage plus harbour-mouth views and who will obey barriers. History-interested visitors and Mosman-based days land well here.

Poor fit for groups that treat fortifications as climbing frames, or for first-timers who only have two hours and really want Bradleys skyline intimacy — go to Bradleys lookouts first.

Heritage rules that save the day

Stay behind barriers. Do not invent “secret” military-site wanders. Restricted areas exist for safety and conservation. Tour-only spaces stay tour-only.

Interpretive walking is slower than a pure lookout dash — that is the point. If the group is speed-focused only, pick a shorter lookout product instead.

Access and pairing

Primarily car or local bus plus walk. Ferry-first stories are stronger at Bradleys (Taronga) or South Head (Watsons Bay). Build parking and fee honesty into the plan.
